Westmoreland - About Us

The Westmoreland Community Development Fund was registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, Chapter 159 on December 24, 1992 and has been in operation since February 1993. This initiative was started by Micro Investment Development Agency, MIDA, through its field officers, Paul Buchanan, then Technical Director, Eveland Marks, Parish Development Officer, and the people of Eastern Westmoreland.

The Member of Parliament, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. P.J. Patterson initially gave one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00) from the Social and Economic Support Programme, (SESP) funds, as Equity Funding (Seed Capital). At the launch he challenged the people to save and he would match savings over six (6) month period. The groups saved seven hundred thousand dollars ($700,000.00), and he made good his promise.

Presently the Westmoreland CDF serves the entire parish of Westmoreland, with a share capital of $219,400.00. The CDF has assisted over 177 projects and loans in excess of $12 million dollars have been disbursed. Some of the areas receiving assistance are horticulture, poultry, agriculture, trading haberdashery, craft, aquaculture and fishing, welding and commercial transportation.
